Getting there
Metro Line 3 runs from Athens International Airport to Syntagma in the city centre, and Acropoli and Monastiraki stations are close to the old town.
When to walk
In summer, walk early in the morning or in the evening, when it's cooler. The midday heat from June to September can be intense, so carry water and wear a hat.
Coffee and food
Plaka, Monastiraki and Psyrri are full of cafés and tavernas for a break before or after your walk.
Getting around
The old streets have uneven paving and marble that can be slippery, with some steep climbs. Wear comfortable shoes. Each tour page says whether its route is step-free.
