We want everyone to be able to use Gander, including people who use a screen reader, larger text, a keyboard or voice control. This statement covers the Gander app on iPhone and Android and this website, gander-tours.com.
How accessible Gander is
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We test with automated tools and by hand, and fix problems as we find them.
On this website you can:
- zoom in up to 400% and use your browser's text size settings
- move around using only a keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a "Skip to content" link
- use a screen reader: images have text descriptions, pages have clear headings, and form errors are read out
- read every page in 12 languages
In the app you can:
- use VoiceOver (iPhone) or TalkBack (Android) to find and read tours, and to read the narration
- make the text larger with your phone's text size setting
- read the full words of the narration on screen while it plays, which helps if you're Deaf or hard of hearing
- listen to tours in your own language, and pause or replay any part
Improvements coming in the next app update
We've found some gaps for people using a screen reader, and the next version of the app fixes them:
- the audio player's controls (previous stop, play and pause, next stop, and back or forward 15 seconds) will be read out by name
- the rating stars, the show and hide password buttons, the AI guide's close and send buttons, and the account button will be named too
- links to our privacy policy and terms will be announced as links, and the player's buttons will say when they're switched on
- the button for saving a tour will be named and easier to tap
- you'll be able to tap any sentence of the narration to play from there, and screen readers will tell you so
We'll update this statement when that version is released.
What we know isn't fully accessible yet
- The route map in the app is visual. The audio narration and the on-screen directions describe where to go, but the map itself can't be used with a screen reader.
- The illustrations on tours and guides are decorative and don't have detailed descriptions.
- Some walking routes include steps, hills or uneven ground. Each tour page says whether its route is step-free.
Tell us about a problem
If something in the app or on this website is hard to use, or you need information in another format, please email hello@gander-tours.com or use our contact form. Tell us the page or screen and what happened. We aim to reply within 5 working days.
