Visiting Newcastle
Newcastle is an easy city to explore on foot. The city centre, the Quayside and St James' Park are all within about a 15-minute walk of Newcastle Central Station, which has direct trains from London, Edinburgh and across the north of England. The Tyne and Wear Metro links the city with Gateshead, the coast and Newcastle Airport.
When to walk
Mornings are quieter on the Quayside. On Sundays the Quayside has a weekly market, and after dark the bridges over the Tyne are lit up, which makes an evening walk worthwhile too.
Coffee and food
Grey Street, the Grainger Market and the Quayside all have plenty of cafés, pubs and places to eat before or after a walk.
Getting around
The riverside along the Quayside is flat, but the streets that climb from the river up to the city centre are steep. Each tour page says whether its route is step-free, so you can pick the right one.
Why go self-guided
With a self-guided tour you can start when you're ready, stop for a coffee halfway and pick up again later. It suits a free afternoon, a few hours before a train, or the time before a match.
